OptAV Solutions OPTAV Solutions a consulting as well as a research and development firm specialized in photonics, particularly in power fiber lasers and amplifiers. Founded in 2006 by Alain Villeneuve, Ph.D., OptAV Solutions operates in the general area of photonics, but its expertise targets the generation, amplification and use of short laser-generated pulses. The company more specifically emphasizes pulsed fiber lasers and amplifiers in the near infrared. Fiber lasers and amplifiers offer numerous advantages over other lasers, such as high energy efficiency, easy cooling capability, and superior beam quality. In addition, they can be used in many types of applications in different industries: LIDAR, range finding, infrared imaging, free space telecommunications, wind and turbulence sensing, atmospheric pollutant sensing, etc. Mission Optav Solutions' mission is to study, develop and optimize innovative technologies for optical fibers and optical fiber components in order to design a new generation of fiber lasers for applications in the mid- and the far-infrared, and in the eye-safe region. Founder The founder of OptAV Solutions, Alain Villeneuve, has more than 20 years of experience in the development and use of high power laser and amplifiers. So far, Mr. Villeneuve has published more than 70 articles in scientific journals, presented more than 150 papers in national and international conferences, and has 8 patents. He is an internationally recognized expert in nonlinear optics and materials, in optical systems, components and devices, in all-optical switching, and in integrated optics. His experience in the design, prototyping, development and production of optical fiber lasers and other products also brings an invaluable practical insight into his expertise. Mr. Villeneuve graduated in 1987 from École Polytechnique de Montréal in physics engineering. He obtains his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in 1990 and 1992 from the Optical Sciences Center of the University of Arizona. He continues his research as a post-doctoral fellow in the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (CREOL), at the University of Central Florida, in Orlando. In 1994 he becomes assistant professor in the Physics department at Laval University, then associate professor in 1999. He gets involved from the start in the creation of the Canadian Institute for Photonic Innovations (CIPI) Network of Centers of Excellence, and becomes leader of the theme Engineering of Photonic Devices. His taste for new challenges brings him to ITF Optical Technologies in 2000, where he becomes director for advanced research and forward looking, then vice-president for advanced research from 2001 to 2005. He is in charge of product development, strategic planning and client relations. In particular, he successfully develops and transfers into production several products for the telecommunications industry as well as power fiber lasers. In particular, he built a research group for the implementation of custom fiber lasers for clients, which gave him an invaluable expertise on this type of laser. He briefly returns to academia (2005-2006) at the INRS (National Institute for Scientific Research) where he becomes professor and director of the center Energy, Materials and Telecommunications. In 2006, he founds OptAV Solutions, a consulting firm in photonics. He quickly realizes that there is a pressing need for research and development services in the area of power fiber lasers and amplifiers. OptAV Solutions has now extended its activities to include the research and development of fiber lasers. For this purpose, he teamed up with the CEPHOM/OPTECH, a technology transfer center, where he has access to all the space and necessary equipment for the design, testing and development of his applications.
